...and so goes the rallying cry of hundreds of San Tai San participants, spectators, and supporters. For more than ten years, San Tai San has taken basketball to the streets of Little Tokyo year in and year out. Serving as a demonstration and reminder of our community’s need for a proper sports facility, each year is a celebration of community, sportsmanship, and the thrill of street ball.

Children from 3rd to 7th grades are invited every year to compete in a fun and exciting 3-on-3 tournament in the streets of Little Tokyo. The inaugural tournament, held more than a decade ago, was a message to the City of Los Angeles demonstrating at once strong, unified community support and a need for a community sports and activities center. Hundreds of children from across Southern California have since participated in San Tai San.

With the recent approval of plans for the Budokan of Los Angeles (BoLA), a sports and activities center in Little Tokyo, the event will now be a celebration in the streets of Little Tokyo!

What is a Budokan?

Budokan roughly translates as "martial arts hall" in Japanese.  The name is derived from the Nippon Budokan, a large arena in Central Tokyo, Japan.   The arena was originally constructed for judo competition during the 1964 Summer Olympics, but today serves as a multi-purpose facility that caters to sports, entertainment and other activities.  Currently in the United States, there are numerous budokans which serve as multi-purpose centers for martial arts, team sports such as basketball and volleyball, community activities and other special events.
